In our new mission and vision statement we say: “We welcome all people, providing a safe place to seek, doubt, learn, believe, celebrate, and most of all, experience and express God's love.” In this we are inviting people to come as they are and be who they are in the pursuit of faith. Did you know that this makes us a very dangerous place?
Kenneth Leech says that “pure faith can often seem dangerously close to atheism, for faith rejects false piety.” This is because faith is about connecting us with that which brings meaning and purpose. Faith is more about living a life that is true than debating what is true. It is tireless in its quest for that which brings about what is true, right, noble and beautiful in one’s life.
It also means that has no place for spiritual facades or false piety. Being a person of faith does not mean that we should pretend we have our act together so that people think we are a good Christian. True faith calls for us to be honest about where we are so that we can invite the Spirit of God into those places where we are broken and need God’s help.
At West End, we strive to be a community that helps people discover a faith that flourishes. It also means it is a place where you can be yourself, with all your questions and doubts. This is the stuff God uses to grow our faith and bring healing and beauty into our lives.
