Classes for Children

Church School classes for children meet every Sunday morning during the school year from10:00 to 10:50 a.m. A devotional and preparatory time for the teachers is held at 9:30 a.m., each teacher taking turns planning and leading this gathering. Classes for children from kindergarten through high school begin at 10:00 a.m.
Professionally-prepared curricula is used in younger classes to introduce the children to some of the most familiar and best-loved Bible stories. Older students read the Bible and use a variety of materials prepared or suggested by the teachers.

Church School provides an opportunity for young people and adults to learn through study and discussion about the Bible and about our faith.

Infants and Toddlers

West End provides experienced, loving nursery care for children before, during and after Sunday's morning worship service. Childcare is also provided for most of our special occasions. A glance into the nursery room usually provides a view of multiple activities, from playing, to listening to a Bible story, to drawing, and to sleeping.

Primary Grades

Following the morning church school classes, the children in grades one through eight meet in the sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. for morning worship. After the opening prayers, scripture reading, and the children's message, the children leave the sanctuary to their own devotional time at either Children and Worship or Young Disciples for the remainder of the worship hour.

Middle School

The middle school class meets at 10:00 a.m. and, together with their teachers and our ministers, develop a course of Bible study and discussion which carries them beyond their early lessons, seeking the practical application of their faith, and discerning their individual paths as church communicants.

Adult Classes

The Adult Christian Education class, is a time to discuss, share, question and challenge those faith traditions we hold in common, as well as our individual faith journeys. There are often two separate classes that are open on a drop-in basis. Classes begin at 9:45.

Advent begins on November 30. It is both the beginning of our church year and our season of preparing for Christ's incarnation. He comes to us in this season as a baby. A sense of miracle attends every new life that joins the human family, but this particular child represents God entering the world. The Advent scriptures promise extremes of power; in some cases, they beg for it. How do we reconsile such power with the infant we will celebrate at our Christmas Eve pageant? Is the child just a promise of love and power to be realized in some later day, or is God breaking in on the created world now, again, in total, loving, and immediate authority? Given the state of our world, how is that possible? And if it is possible, how do we hope and fear it will change the world? More particularly, how will it change us? Just what is it we are waiting for? Come explore with us in Room 25, at 9:45 to 10:45 Sunday mornings, November 30 through December 21. PLEASE JOIN US IN ROOM 25!

High School

High school students meet before the worship service with Susan Xenarios, discussing topics of their choice, seeking answers, and challenging themselves. Over the years, they have also established themselves as teacher's aides in our Young Disciples program, acting as mentors to the younger children.

Playschool

A five-day a week, half-day program for children who are three and four years old. See the Playschool web site for further information.
